Cette introduction à la philosophie de l'art du XVIIIe siècle retrace les grandes lignes de pensée de la théorie esthétique telle qu'elle prend formes à la fin du XVlle et au XVllle siècle. Le principe fondamental de l'art à l'époque classique, l'imitation, forme point de départ de la réflexion. L'imitation, principe fondamental de l'art à l'époque classique, forme le point de départ de la réflexion. Dans l'ouvrage principal de la théorie esthétique du XVllle siècle, Les Beaux-arts réduits à un même principe de l'abbé Batteux (1746), l'imitation est présentée comme une relation entre deux pôles, les beaux-arts d'une part, la nature d'autre part. Ces deux versants du processus imitatif forment les deux grands volets du présent ouvrage. Un chapitre central est consacré à la relation particulière entre les arts et la nature telle que l'impose la conception classique de l'imitation. Cette relation est pensée en termes de vraisemblance. En montrant la façon dont la mimésis classique se pense et se repense au XVIIIe siècle, et en mettant en lumière, de part et d'autre de l'ouvrage " classique " de l'abbé Batteux, l'apport fondamental de l'abbé Du Bos en 1719 et de Diderot pour la seconde moitié du siècle, cet ouvrage permet aux non-spécialistes de l'époque classique de se repérer dans le vaste champ de réflexion sur l'art du XVIIIe siècle et de comprendre les mutations qui s'y font jour.

Brigitte Derlon et Monique Jeudy-Ballini sont ethnologues, spécialistes îles tribus insulaires de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée et de leurs arts rituels. Ce livre est le fruit de l'enquête pionnière qu'elles ont menée, non plus en Mélanésie mais à Paris, sur l'imaginaire des collectionneurs d'art primitif. A travers l'analyse de leurs propos, les auteurs explorent l'attachement affectif des collectionneurs à des objets perçus comme autant de présences. Elles relatent la manière dont ils vivent l'expérience esthétique, érigent l'émotion en mode de connaissance et conceptualisent le beau ou l'authentique. Traitant aussi des représentations relatives à l'argent, elles critiquent la vision commune voulant que le langage de la passion ne soit qu'un écran à des motivations économiques inavouées. Au-delà de la figure du collectionneur, les auteurs invitent à repenser le rapport des hommes aux choses, c'est-à-dire en définitive le rapport des personnes à elles-mêmes : toute collection n'est jamais qu'une forme de réappropriation identitaire qui, à une certaine image de l'altérité, surimpose le reflet de soi.

Plastics are now ubiquitous and unavoidable, from the plastic bag and other items with functional uses - such as household, office, electrical appliances and clothing - to works of art including sculpture, tapestries etc. The myriad of different plastic-based materials and the ways in which they have been treated before, during and after manufacture can leave the conservator, artist and collections manager bewildered as to their identification and hence appropriate treatment and prognosis for any particular object.This volume of papers from a conference held at the Victoria and Albert Museum is intended as a 'marker in the sand', a record of current perceptions and considerations of plastics within museum collections - their importance and problems (inter alia of insurance, pollution, display, decay and conservation).
